i feel smart.

so, it's been awhile. if you are still reading. i mean, maybe ade and i are the only ones reading this. in that case...this is for you, ade.

i get the word of the day emails from merriam-webster. for the most part, i enjoy getting a new word each day. i try to incorporate that word into my everyday conversations. it tends to prove a little difficult because of the population that i work with (staff and clients, alike...maybe that was mean...oh well).

well, today was a word that i vowed i was going to use. several times. because it was super easy to remember and, apparently, has multiple meanings. who knew? merriam-webster, that's who. so, without further ado...today's word of the day.

billion \BILL-yun\

DEFINITION
noun

1: the number 1,000,000,000 : a thousand million b British, old-fashioned : the number 1,000,000,000,000 : a million million

2: a very large number

two things and then i'm done. first, i wasn't aware that billion isn't just a billion. i mean, it could be a thousand million. or a million million. or just a really big number. i like that billion is vague. way to be, billion. elusive and vague. just like a number should be.

second...really, merriam-webster? really? and we wonder why the kids are getting dumb. it couldn't be because the word of the day is soooooo challenging, could it?

well, could it?

sometimes, when my word of the day emails contain a word that is so commonly known, i waver between two emotions. the first is a feeling of superiority, regardless of the word. i think that, since i already knew that, i must be some super genius or something. i know, silly, right? the other feeling i get is one of bewilderment. like, "do both merriam AND webster both think i am dumb enough to not now that word!?" or, better yet, "there must be some real idiots out there if THIS is the word of the day (as i roll my eyes in my superior knowledge of the english language)?" as if.
